The global spa tourism industry is a lucrative one.

Those in the spa and wellness industry will be interested to hear the Global Spa & Wellness Summit (GSWS) has unveiled its theme for 2014.

A 'Fast Forward' futurist theme has been decided on for the eighth annual event, which takes place on September 10-12 at the Four Seasons Resort in Marrakech, Morocco.

The event is considered to be the world's most prestigious business, government and academic gathering within the wellness, spa and travel industries, and this year's summit is forecast to attract record numbers of attendees.

The second ever Global Wellness Tourism Congress will run at the same time as the GSWS.

Susie Ellis, chairwoman and CEO of the GSWS, says the summit is well and truly hitting the Fast Forward button this year.

"Our agenda and keynote speakers will be focused on looking closely and creatively at the future of spa and wellness, from new technologies that will transform our businesses and the way wellness gets delivered; to the future of design; to exploring the latest in brain science and its implications; to the next wave in retailing; to presenting crucial, new research that will illuminate and shape our industry's future path," she says.

The first announced keynote speaker at the summit is Dr. Kjell A. Nordstrom. Dr Nordstrom is a Swedish economist, futurist thought-leader and co-author of Funky Business. He believes the future of the industry is global and female.

The host country sponsor of the 2014 event is the Moroccan Agency for Tourism Development (SMIT). Ellis says the country is expected to have an incredible annual growth rate in the wellness tourism industry, and currently ranks among the top 10 nations. In fact, the country is expected to see growth 60 per cent faster than the global average in the industry.
